Heading Back East - July 21

(Wednesday 22 July 2009) by Kathy & Andy
Yesterday we spent at Crazy Horse Memorial, driving the Needles Highway, and then a fun afternoon of Mini-Golf, a Maze and swimming for the kids. At night, it was Papa B's 70th birthday party (his birthday is officially the 23rd) and a campfire.

Then today, we went back to Mount Rushmore to finish the kids Junior Ranger badges before heading back East! We're not exactly sure of our arrival and already hit one hiccup - time changes in the 'wrong' direction. So, we're back on central time and the kids are losing an hours sleep a couple times on the way home.

We had to say goodbye to the Spencer's today (Scott, Trish, Will, and Margot) and then another goodbye for Papa and Grandma B as we left Rapid City.

The kids last momento of the Mount Rushmore area was in Keystone, where a 'blacksmith along the road' showed the kids how to make a black, polished railroad spike with their name on it that they were allowed to keep. They thought it was really funny that the guy thought daddy was grumpy (but we were 1 1/2 hrs later leaving than I thought!) and didn't believe I was their dad because they were so much fun.

We are now in Mitchell, South Dakota. We found a hotel that has an indoor waterslide connected - Eric had a blast and Alyna loved it too, after working up a little courage. We drove more miles today than we did the first night across NY, PA, and Ohio but are still in the same state as we were this morning. Now the speed limits will start getting lower, the population more dense, and the states smaller. But home awaits - we are tired.
